地蔵菩薩（じぞうぼさつ）

サンスクリット語では「クシティガルバ」（क्षितिघर्भ [Kṣitigarbha]）という

大地が全ての命を育む力を蔵するように、苦悩の人々を、その無限の大慈悲の心で包み込み、救う所から名付けられたとされる。

弥勒菩薩(みろくぼさつ)とは？

弥勒とは古代インドではマイトレーヤと呼ばれ、慈悲から生まれた者を意味しています。仏となることを約束されているため、弥勒仏・弥勒如来と呼ばれることもあります。釈迦が亡くなられてから５６億７千万年後に仏となりこの世に現れ、釈迦の教えで救われなかった人々を救済するといわれています。ちなみに５６億７千万年後とは、地球を含む太陽系が消滅する余命とほぼ一致しています。

現在は仏教世界の中央にそびえる須弥山（しゅみせん）の上空にある兜率天（とそつてん）という天界で修行をしています。

右足を曲げて左膝の上に乗せ、右手の指を頬に当てて物思いにふけるような半跏思惟像（はんかしいぞう）が多く造られました。これは将来どのようにして人々を救えばよいか思い悩んでいる姿とされています。

By the way, 5.67 billion years later is almost the same as the life expectancy when the solar system including the earth disappears.
